Hollow Shapes - treasure boxes
Saturday, May 16th and Saturday, May 23rd - 1-3pm
Join me on this 2-week intensive class, we’ll focus on creating, throwing, and trimming lidded jars from hollow forms on the potter’s wheel.
Learn how to properly open, collar, and compress a hollow form on the wheel to create a separate lid and base from the same piece of clay. This course is a great way to refine the skills you learned in Beginning Wheel by moving beyond the classic cylinder. This class is recommended for advanced beginners and intermediate level potters who feel comfortable with the throwing process.
This is a condensed class which will meet for two hours each week for a total of two sessions, with additional open studio time between classes for you to practice on your own.
CLASS OUTLINE :
This Continuing Wheel workshop will focus on the fundamentals of closing a form to trap air and create a hollow piece on the wheel. Students in this class will be able to explore and construct lidded vessels from a closed shape.
Week 1: Throwing and Constructing Closed Forms on the Wheel
Week 2: Techniques for Trimming, Considerations and Best Practices for Firing and Glazing.
Students in this class will have studio access between May 16th and 27th during practice hours: 10am-8pm Monday-Thursday, 10am-6pm Friday-Sunday.
Bisque firing is included in this course; glaze firing can be arranged with the studio for an additional fee. Bisque pieces will be available for pickup approximately 3-4 weeks after the class has ended.
To get the most out of this class, you should feel comfortable with all of the steps and processes you learned in the four week Beginning Wheel course, and can somewhat reliably wedge, center, and throw 2.5 lbs of clay.
Students should bring their own clay, tools, and bats (we recommend at least four 12" bats). We have a supply shop at the studio where you can purchase these things if you need them. The course fee includes BISQUE firing for up to 6 pieces (under 12" in any direction).
